Questions

How do I open Parent Settings?

Choose the cadet, then Parent Settings at the bottom of their base, and answer the grown-up maths question. Each cadet has their own settings.

How do I choose which times tables my child practises?

In Parent Settings, use Times tables focus and tap the tables you want. They lead every alien wave and fill the Training Simulator. Leave them all off to follow the school year.

How do I switch money, fractions or telling the time on or off?

In Parent Settings, each topic has its own switch. They’re on from Year 1 by default. Beside each switch, use − and + to move that topic a year easier or harder than the child’s school year. When a topic is on, one of the three missions offered each time is about it, and it appears in the Training Simulator.

How do I change a cadet’s school year, or use US, Canadian or Australian maths?

Both are in Parent Settings. The Earth region sets the school-year names, the currency in money questions, how clock times are written and the spelling. It starts from your device’s region. Levels line up by school year, so UK Year 3 gets the same content as US Grade 3.

What is the Times Tables Check practice?

It’s for Year 4 and up, and it’s set up like the Multiplication Tables Check that Year 4 pupils in England take each June: 25 questions from the 2 to 12 times tables, 6 seconds for each, a short pause between them, and the score at the end. As in the real check, questions aren’t read aloud. Outside the UK it’s called the Times Tables Challenge. It’s free, and the answers count towards your child’s progress.

My child finds the number pad hard. Can they tap answers instead?

Yes. In Parent Settings, under Answering, choose Tap an answer. You can also switch counting pictures on or off. Reception starts with tapping and pictures; everyone else starts with the number pad.

Can the questions be read aloud, or shown in a dyslexia-friendly font?

Both are under Audio & Reading in Parent Settings. Reading aloud uses your device’s own voice. If nothing is spoken, check the device’s volume and that an English voice is installed in its accessibility or speech settings.

Where is the progress report?

At the top of Parent Settings. Once a week, after some play, a “weekly report is ready” card also appears on the cadet’s base, behind the grown-up question. The headline numbers and trickiest facts are free. Premium adds the times tables grid, the weekly summary, Times Tables Check scores with the facts that were slow, progress by topic, and sharing the report as text.

How do I back up my cadets, or move them to another device?

Open Parent Settings, then Backup & Restore, and choose Back up now. You’ll be asked to sign in with Google. The backup goes into a hidden folder in your own Drive that only this game can see. On another device, open the same screen and choose Sync from Drive. Cadets combine rather than overwrite, so nothing is lost.

How do I delete my backup?

In a desktop web browser, open Google Drive and choose the gear icon, then Settings, then Manage apps. Find Maths & Martians, choose Options, then Delete hidden app data. This can’t be done from the Drive mobile app. You can also remove the game’s access from your Google Account’s security settings.

I bought Premium on another device. How do I get it here?

Open Parent Settings, choose Unlock Premium, then “Bought it before? Restore purchase”. Use the same app store account you bought with.

Why can’t I add another cadet?

Free play has room for 2 cadets on a device. Premium makes room for up to 20.

How do I delete a cadet?

In that cadet’s Parent Settings, choose Delete this cadet at the bottom, then confirm. This can’t be undone.

Why is there a maths question before Parent Settings?

It keeps settings, the report and purchases in grown-up hands. It isn’t a password, and an older child may well be able to answer it, so it’s worth keeping an eye on.

Does anything I buy make the maths easier?

No. Crystals, earned in battles, buy cosmetic extras such as hats, paint jobs and pets. Premium adds more cadets, the full report and some extra shop items. It doesn’t change the questions or how hard they are.

The maths

The content for each school year follows the programmes of study in the National Curriculum in England, with regional versions guided by the US Common Core State Standards, the Ontario Mathematics Curriculum (2020) and the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics. The questions themselves were written for Maths & Martians, and the game isn’t endorsed by any of those bodies.
